Contextul
Knauf is one of the largest producers of gypsum-based construction materials. Dry mortar and plaster recipes contain additives at very low concentrations — setting modifiers, water retention agents, fibres — on which the behaviour of the product on site depends.
The technical problem in such a recipe is not blending the main components but distributing evenly an additive that makes up under 1 % of the batch mass: if it does not reach the whole batch equally, some of the bags produced behave differently from the rest, and the defect is only discovered during application.
